Tshwane’s Municipal Workers Fight for Justice Amid Ongoing Wage Disputes and Unlawful Dismissals

Over the past two years, Tshwane’s municipal workers, under the banner of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu), have been locked in a bitter struggle with the City of Tshwane. At the heart of this conflict are longstanding wage disputes, including demands for historical salary increases of 3.5% and 5.4% from 2021 and 2023. Despite repeated calls, the municipality has yet to fully honour these agreements, leaving workers frustrated and disillusioned.

Unlawful Dismissals: A Blow to Workers’ Rights

A particularly contentious issue has been the “unlawful dismissal” of 45 municipal workers accused of crimes during last year’s unprotected wage strike. Samwu has condemned these dismissals, arguing they are not only unjust to the affected individuals but also a broader attack on the collective rights of all municipal workers. The union has vowed to intensify efforts to reinstate these workers and hold the City of Tshwane accountable for its failure to honour salary increases.

Where Does the Money Go?

One of the most glaring contradictions in this ongoing saga is the City’s ability to increase municipal rates but inability to sustain employment or address wage disputes. As rates continue to rise, many are asking: where is this money going? The lack of action on wages has only deepened public frustration, with workers and residents questioning the prioritisation of service delivery over employee well-being.

Calls for Accountability and Worker Empowerment

Samwu’s new leadership has made it clear that they will not back down in their fight for justice. Strengthening worker representation, holding the City accountable, and demanding transparency around the allocation of funds are top priorities. The union has emphasised the need for greater solidarity and the fight against exploitation and intimidation.

In a time when workers’ rights and dignity are under threat, Samwu’s commitment to defending municipal employees remains unwavering. The City of Tshwane must be held accountable, not only for the financial mismanagement but also for failing to invest in the people who serve the public.
